And do you know…
As the result of a meeting held between a group of Sudanese men and priests in our Deanery on 11th of August 2004, it became obvious that many of the Sudanese needed financial help in sponsoring family members out to Australia from Kenya and/or Egypt where they had fled to escape the war raging in their homeland.
Hearing this Fr. Tony contacted St Vincent de Paul Society Headquarters, the Archdiocese and our own Parish Finance Committee to put forward a proposal of setting a “No-interest Resettlement Loan Account” to help our Sudanese families reunite with family members.
St Vincent de Paul contributed $20,000 to this account, the Archdiocese contributed $7,500 and our own Parish of St Anthony’s contributed $4,000. So come October 2004 had $31,500 in our funding “No-interest Resettlement Loan Account.
In the ensuing two and something years that amount has made loans totalling $101,924.02 and helped resettle and reunite 88 family members.
It has been a project St Anthony’s Parish can be justly proud of. It is also a project our Sudanese brothers and sisters have appreciated and respected that is why that flegling amount of $31,000 is now going around for its third time!
