A message from Fr Tony

Greetings to you and all at St. Anthony’s. I have arrived at Sangre and got the first full day under the belt. The ground is still covered in snow here and I hear more snow is expected this weekend. It is a bit hard walking in I might tell you!

A challenge was put to us last night at our first Mass together to leave the chaos of a busy world behind and enter as full as we are able into the 100 day experience – leaving the chaos of a busy world behind was inllustrated as putting away all laptops and not visitng the computer room and locking away all mobile phones (not that they work here anyway!).

I have decided to try my best and so will not be sending regular correspondence out, so you can pray all the more for me in this self imposed silence of the desert.

Did I tell you that there are 7 Aussies on the program and that I am the only male! This photo was taken when I was in Detroit where it was minus 20 degrees Celcius!

Love to you, Fabian and all the parishioners.

Fr Tony

DO YOU KNOW?

February 2, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Did you know that during the year of 2006 at St Anthony’s we celebrated:
 Baptisms:
  - Infants under 1 year: ……….. 55
  - Between 1 and 7 years:…….. 08
  - Adults (over 7 years):………. 16
 First Holy Communion:……………… 76
 Adults received full Communion:… 15
 Confirmations:…………………………… 88
 Marriages:…………………………………..15
 Funerals:……………………………………. 65

And do you know…

As the result of a meeting held between a group of Sudanese men and priests in our Deanery on 11th of August 2004, it became obvious that many of the Sudanese needed financial help in sponsoring family members out to Australia from Kenya and/or Egypt where they had fled to escape the war raging in their homeland.

Hearing this Fr. Tony contacted St Vincent de Paul Society Headquarters, the Archdiocese and our own Parish Finance Committee to put forward a proposal of setting a “No-interest Resettlement Loan Account” to help our Sudanese families reunite with family members.

St Vincent de Paul contributed $20,000 to this account, the Archdiocese contributed $7,500 and our own Parish of St Anthony’s contributed $4,000. So come October 2004 had $31,500 in our funding “No-interest Resettlement Loan Account.

In the ensuing two and something years that amount has made loans totalling $101,924.02 and helped resettle and reunite 88 family members.

It has been a project St Anthony’s Parish can be justly proud of. It is also a project our Sudanese brothers and sisters have appreciated and respected that is why that flegling amount of $31,000 is now going around for its third time!

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time – 4 February 2007

February 2, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Who will be our messenger’? (1st reading).

‘They left everything and followed Jesus’ (Gospel).

The call to follow Jesus does not come in thunder and lightning but in the ordinary day to day experiences of life: washing nets or washing up, raising children, preparing for exams or preparing a budget, working at a computer or repairing a car.

Isaiah, Paul and Peter were ordinary blokes. In a group they would not have stood out. Their backgrounds were very ordinary. Yet God chose them. All three surrendered to their God and produced extraordinary results.

Why do we hold back?

When were the times you felt ‘called’ to do something?

Now did you respond?
